Counsel

We shared yesterday how David composed Psalm 119. Today we will search out Psalm 119:17-24 under the section for the Hebrew letter Gimel.  This is the third letter in the Hebrew Aleph Bet and it also represents the ordinal number three within the Hebrew language.  This language does not have a separate numbering system.  It uses the Hebrew letters for numbers. The Gimel in the ancient font was represented by a camel head.  It means to lift up as one who carries a loadpride and animal. Inside of the verses below we will see how David understood what is to be his counsel.

Psalm 119:17-24 says,

Gimel

17 Deal bountifully with Your servant, that I may live and keep Your word.

18 Open my eyes, that I may behold wonderful things from Your law.

19 I am a stranger in the earth; do not hide Your commandments from me.

20 My soul is crushed with longing after Your ordinances at all times.

21 You rebuke the arrogant, the cursed, who wander from Your commandments.

22 Take away reproach and contempt from me, for I observe Your testimonies.

23 Even though princes sit and talk against me, your servant meditates on Your statutes[This is a way to overcome worry about what others think or say…meditate on His Word.]

24 Your testimonies also are my delightthey are my counselors[The word testimonies in this verse is the Hebrew word Edah.  It’s from the word that means “…always of laws as divine testimonies and witnesses.”  It’s also from the Hebrew Root meaning congregation, assembly, company, people.  How many witnesses or people do we need for a testimony to be established according to the Torah? Two or three. (Deut. 19:15, 17:6, 2 Cor 13:1, Matt 18:16, 1 Tim 5:19) In Hebrew thought each verse in the Word has multiple levels of understanding, therefore another way of reading this verse with the Hebrew meaning is, “Your people are my delight; they are my counselors.”

Isaiah 44:24-26 says,

24 Thus says YHVH, your Redeemer, and the one who formed you from the womb, “I, YHVH, am the maker of all things, stretching out the heavens by Myself and spreading out the earth all alone,

25 Causing the omens of boasters to fail, making fools out of diviners, causing wise [Word for wise or cunningmen to draw back and turning their knowledge into foolishness, [Not Yah’s knowledge from the Word…but THEIR knowledge into foolishness.]

26 Confirming the word of His servant and performing the purpose [Hebrew word for Counsel] of His messengers. It is I who says of Jerusalem, ‘She shall be inhabited!’ And of the cities of Judah, ‘They shall be built.’ and I will raise up her ruins again.” [YHVH’s messengers will always tell of His Word.  Anyone bringing something contrary to the Word is not a messenger bringing counsel from Him.]

Zechariah 1:2-6 says,

2 “YHVH was very angry with your fathers.

3 Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says YHVH of hosts, “Return to Me,” declares YHVH of hosts, “that I may return to you,” says YHVH of hosts.

4 “Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets proclaimed, saying, ‘Thus says YHVH of hosts, “Return now from your evil ways and from your evil deeds.”’ But they did not listen or give heed to Me,” [They did not take the counsel of the word.] declares YHVH.

5 “Your fathers, where are they? And the prophets, do they live forever?

6 But did not My words and My statutes, which I commanded My servants the prophets, overtake your fathersThen they repented and said, ‘As YHVH of hosts purposed to do to us in accordance with our ways and our deeds, so He has dealt with us.’”’”

The Spirit of Counsel will always lead and direct us back to the Father and His truths!! May we develop a deep and abiding love for the Torah as David had and delight in His people who are our counselors.

Have a blessed and shalom filled day!!
