Wisdom

Continuing from the “Thirty Sayings of the Wise” in the book of Proverbs, we will focus on “The Overcomer”.

Saying Number 25: Proverbs 24:10-12; “10 If you falter in a time of trouble, how small is your strength! 11 Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. 12 If you say, “But we knew nothing about this,” does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards your life know it? Will he not repay everyone according to what they have done?”

There are times that we get weary from the fight, but if we’ll stay the course we will be strengthened and get to the other side as an overcomer.  As the verses above state, we are not to falter in our fights, we are to help rescue others in their battles, and there is a recompense for the one who doesn’t help someone else overcome.

Deuteronomy 20:8, under the “Laws of Warfare”, says, “Then the officers shall add, “Is anyone afraid or fainthearted? Let him go home so that his fellow soldiers will not become disheartened too.” When we do not have an overcoming spirit to stay in the battle until the victory is won, it is a discouragement to those around us.  It truly is an inspiration to be around people who refuse to give up.

In the story of the Ten Spies, they came back from the land with an evil report and it discouraged the sons of Israel. They gave up!! However, Caleb stood up.  In Numbers 13:30 it says; “Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “We should, by all means, go up and take possession of it, for we will surely overcome it.” And he was one of the two that spied out the land and overcome it and was allowed to go in after forty years in the wilderness.

My Father, our founding pastor, was very consistent in teaching us about being overcomers.  It was part of his core values and he stressed that to his children and congregation on a very regular basis.  When I was a young married woman with two small children, Mark worked offshore seven days gone and seven days home.  As it always seemed to be the case, everything happened while he was ninety miles out in the Gulf of Mexico.  One night about 8:30 pm I received a phone call from a neighbor saying that she just passed our home (we lived in town at the time) and two men were looking in my bedroom window.  I felt the blood drain from my body.  I’m home alone with two small children and a million things were running through my mind that I should do.  I first called the police and then my parents.  We were in the middle of getting things ready to pour a new concrete driveway at our house. The preparation for the concrete involved packing red dirt as the foundation.  Sure enough, the police saw two sets of men’s shoes at the window that the neighbor saw them.  They searched and searched and never did find them.  My mother suggested that the children and I come and stay with them that night to be on the safe side.  I strongly sensed that if I left that night and didn’t stay to overcome my fear that I would never want to stay alone again. That was the WORST night’s sleep ever and yes, I was AFRAID!! But I was afraid FORWARD!!!  Because I faced that night and overcame it, each night got easier and easier and I was no longer afraid to stay alone.

This is just a simple example, but I truly believe that had I not overcome that night I could have received a spirit of fear that would have affected every area of my life.

Revelation 3:5 says, “He who overcomes will thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.”

May we receive the Spirit of Wisdom from the Word today and purpose to be an overcomer in this life and stay the course!!

Have a blessed and shalom filled day!!
