Understanding
This week we will continue in Psalm 119 that David wrote. As we mentioned before, Psalm 119 has 176 verses divided up into twenty-two sets of eight. Each set is represented by a letter of the Hebrew aleph bet beginning with the Aleph and ending with the last letter of the aleph bet…the Tav. As a reminder, the first word of the verse in each set begins with the Hebrew letter for that set. Today we will read the 18th set which is represented by the Hebrew letter Tzadhe. The ancient symbol for this word looks like a fish hook. It means catch, desire or need. As we read the verses below may we catch it, desire it and realize our need for it!!
When David wrote this 18th set of verses he starts with praising YHVH and closes with a request for understanding so that he may live. The Bible gives us our understanding and within those pages are the words to LIFE !!! Had Adam and Eve obeyed the Word of YHVH given to them in the garden they would have lived. As a result of disobedience to those Words, death and decay entered into the world. But because of Yeshua, the living Word, giving His life and pointing us back to the truth of the written Word, when received and obeyed, we now have eternal life. Let’s expect to gain understanding as we read Psalm 119:137-144.

137 Righteous are You, O YHVH, and upright are Your judgments.
138 You have commanded Your testimonies in righteousness and exceeding faithfulness.
139 My zeal has consumed me, because my adversaries have forgotten Your words.
140 Your word is very pure, therefore Your servant loves it.
141 I am small and despised, yet I do not forget Your precepts.
142 Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Your law is truth.
143 Trouble and anguish have come upon me, yet Your commandments are my delight.
144 Your testimonies are righteous forever; give me understanding that I may live.
In context with forgetting Your words and not forgetting Your precepts, Let’s read a few verses in order to gain understanding from some very familiar words of Yeshua in Matthew 5:17-20, “17 “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. [The meaning of fulfill in this verse means to fill it up with meaning. In other words, to bring you back to its intended meaning. It doesn’t mean to end it or it’s no longer necessary as is often taught. Yeshua just said, prior to the word fulfill that, “I did not come to abolish (end or delete) the law or the prophets.] 18 For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. [Heaven and earth are still here and all has not been accomplished yet for the kingdom.] 19 Whoever then annuls [Does away with] one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 “For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” We often hear that to be obedient to the commandments is Pharisaical, but Yeshua Himself is telling us that our righteousness needs to surpass what they were doing. They had strayed from the Word and commanded their own laws and those were placed on par with the Torah; in several cases, some actually exceeded Torah and caused one to break the commandments of YHVH. This was the problem with the scribes and Pharisees. Not obedience to the truth.
May we receive the Spirit of Understanding so that we can better obey the Word, love it, see it as a delight and never forget!!
