Spirit of YHVH

Many of us from a fundamental Christian faith have been taught most of our lives that the Holy Spirit wasn’t given until Acts 2.  In fact, some have taught that it wasn’t even found in the “Old Testament”.  However, one doesn’t have to look past Genesis 1 to see the Spirit at work.  We sometimes confuse the way the Spirit is manifested with the existence of the Holy Spirit.  Clearly Joel 2 prophesied about that which would take place in Acts 2, and it is true that a deeper experience of the Holy Spirit in our lives was not given until then; but as we’ve shared before, if we understand the “Who Was and Is and Is to come” concept, then we know that from seed to fruit we will see the Spirit of YHVH in some form or another throughout the Scriptures.  Today we will read where the children of Israel, who have been in exile in Babylon, confessing their sins and recounting and acknowledging to YHVH all of His former acts of compassion, instruction and salvation that was a result and work of His Spirit.

Nehemiah 9:16-21 says,

16 “But they, our fathers, acted arrogantly; they became stubborn and would not listen to Your commandments.

17 “They refused to listen, and did not remember Your wondrous deeds which You had performed among them; so they became stubborn and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt. But You are an Elohim of forgiveness, gracious and

compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness; and You did not forsake them.

18 “Even when they made for themselves a calf of molten metal and said, ‘This is your Elohim who brought you up from Egypt,’ and committed great blasphemies,

19 You, in Your great compassion, did not forsake them in the wilderness; the pillar of cloud did not leave them by day, to guide them on their way, nor the pillar of fire by night, to light for them the way in which they were to go.

20 “You gave Your good [Tov] Spirit to instruct them, Your manna You did not withhold from their mouth, and You gave them water for their thirst.
21 “Indeed, forty years You provided for them in the wilderness and they were not in want; their clothes did not wear out, nor did their feet swell.

Nehemiah 9 goes onto say in verses 30-31,

30 “However, You bore with them for many years, and admonished them by Your Spirit through Your prophets, yet they would not give ear. Therefore You gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands.

31 “Nevertheless, in Your great compassion You did not make an end of them or forsake them, for You are a gracious and compassionate Elohim.

Our heavenly Father goes to great lengths to give us every opportunity to stay connected to Him through His Holy Spirit.  And, because of His faithfulness to His covenant, His lovingkindness and compassion, He gives His Spirit to admonish and discipline us so that we will return to Him.  Since the Hebrew word for Spirit is Ruach and means breath, wind, etc…then with every breath we take it can serve as a huge reminder of His great compassion and desire to stay in covenant with His people!!  He’s given us of His own Spirit to help us do all that is required to stay in His house!! O what LOVE He has for His people!!! He is close, even in our very breath!!

Have a blessed and shalom filled day!!
