Understanding

“He is not here, but He is RISEN…” Luke 24:6.  These are the words spoken to Mary Magdalene, Joanna and Mary the mother of James (Yeshua’s mother) and the other women with them by the two men in dazzling clothing when they came with spices to the tomb.

The ladies were telling the apostles what they experienced and in Luke 24:11 it says of the apostles, “But these words appeared to them as nonsense, and they would not believe them.” It appeared as nonsense to them because they did not understand what was being told to them.  Peter got up and ran to the tomb, he saw only the linen wrappings and then went home marveling at what had happened, though not really understanding yet.

Let’s continue reading in Luke 24:13-16, “13 And behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 And they were talking with each other about all these things which had taken place. 15 While they were talking and discussing, Yeshua Himself approached and began traveling with them. 16 But their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him.” They did not understand yet who they were seeing. As they walked along the road Yeshua began asking them what they were talking about and they said in verses 18-20, 18 “Are You the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things which have happened here in these days?” 19 And He said to them, “What things?” And they said to Him, “The things about Yeshua the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word in the sight of Elohim and all the people, 20 and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to the sentence of death, and crucified Him.” The men go on to tell him how they thought He was going to be the redeemer of Israel, that women found His tomb empty and that angels told the women that He was ALIVE!! Others also went to the tomb and found it empty as they had said.

After listening to all that the men had to say Yeshua answered them in Luke 24:25-27, “25 And He said to them, “O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 “Was it not necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?” 27 Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.”  Yeshua began to give them the understanding that they lacked; notice where the understanding came from…in all the Scriptures. This is confirmed over and over through the patterns; one will walk in the Spirit of Understanding as they read the Scriptures with faith, believing all the words therein.

Yeshua stayed with the men and ate with them.  He took the bread (which would be unleavened because it was during the Feast of Unleavened Bread) and blessed it, broke it and gave them some; it goes on in verse 31 to say, Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight.” After breaking bread with Him they were given the ability to understand who He really was.  Could it be possible that as we walk through the Feast of Unleavened Bread each year, eating our Matzah, that we, too, can have our eyes opened to understand better our Messiah Yeshua and the truth?  I believe so!!!

Yeshua vanished from them and found the eleven disciples gathered together talking about the two who had seen Him and how they recognized Him in the breaking of bread (eating of Matzah).  He spoke up in their midst and said, “Peace to you (Shalom Aleichem).”  This startled and frightened them as they were not expecting to see Him themselves. He began the process of proving it was He and then asked for something to eat.  They gave Him broiled fish.

Let’s close out with what Yeshua said to the disciples after He ate.  Luke 24:44-49, “44 Now He said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Messiah would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 “You are witnesses of these things. 49 “And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

After Yeshua opened their mind to understand the Scriptures, He repeated what He had been teaching them while they walked with Him before His crucifixion and resurrection, only this time they will finally understand WHAT He was saying.

He would:

  1. Suffer
  2. Rise again the third day
  3. Repentance for forgiveness of sin would now be proclaimed in His name to the nations, starting from Jerusalem (He is the sacrifice that fulfilled the requirement of the Torah for the forgiveness of sin)
  4. You are witnesses of the things
  5. I’m sending the promise of my Father to you…the clothing of Power from on high (The Holy Spirit infilling that happened on Shavuot/Feast of Pentecost)

May our minds also be opened to understand the Scriptures!!

“He is not here, but He is RISEN…”
