Wisdom

We are continuing through the “Thirty Sayings of the Wise” from the book of Proverbs.  We will focus on the ones that deal with the ancient boundaries.

Saying number 5: Proverbs 22:28; Do not move the ancient boundary which your fathers have set.”

Saying number 11: Proverbs 23:10-11; “10 Do not move the ancient boundary or go into the fields of the fatherless, 11 For their Redeemer is strong; He will plead their case against you.”

Proverbs 15:25; “YHVH will tear down the house of the proud, but He will establish the boundary of the widow.” According to the IVP commentary: “the widow lived without the normal legal protection of her husband and could have been easily preyed on. Thus the proverb speaks against infringing her rights.”  YHVH is a husband to the widow and He protects her.

Patterns from the Foundation of the Torah:

Deuteronomy 19:14; You shall not move your neighbor’s boundary mark, which the ancestors have set, in your inheritance which you will inherit in the land that the YHVH your Elohim gives you to possess.”

Deuteronomy 27:17; “Cursed is he who moves his neighbor’s boundary stone.’ And let all the people say, ‘Amen!’”

As you can see, it is very serious in the eyes of YHVH to move the ancient boundaries, but why is this? The IVP commentary says, “Since the land had been given to the people by Elohim and apportioned according to a His formula, to move boundary stones and thus appropriate territory unlawfully was a crime of theft against YHVH.” Basically it is considered encroachment and stealing and this breaks the commandment of YHVH.

In the natural we are to practice not moving land boundaries. We are to guard them.  In the same way we are told to guard and keep the commandments of Elohim.  Since we’re on the Spirit of Wisdom today I will use one from Proverbs 7:1-2; “1 My son, keep my words and treasure my commandments within you. 2 Keep my commandments and live, and my teaching as the apple of your eye.” The Hebrew word translated “keep” is the word “shamar” and it means, “to keep, to guard, to observe, to give heed, to protect, to wait for, to retain, to treasure up, to observe, and to celebrate”.  When we decide to “move the boundary of the meaning” of a commandment, this too, is forbidden.  The commandments are considered guardrails that serve as safety boundaries for our walk as a believer!! When we guard and keep the commandments of YHVH we are restoring the ancient path…the ancient boundary if you will (Isaiah 58:12).  This is part of the Restoration of All Things that is taking place in these last days.

May the Spirit of Wisdom illuminate the boundaries of His Word and may we not move them through neglect willfully or unintentionally.
