Spirit of YHVH

In John 20:21, it’s after the resurrection and Yeshua appears to His disciples and says, “Shalom Aleichem/Peace to you!”  As soon as He said this, in verse 22, he immediately goes on to say what would become a VITAL piece of instruction/counsel.  “22. And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” Many teach that this is when the disciples received the Holy Spirit.  But that cannot be as Yeshua said it would not come until He leaves.  Further evidence of this is the fact that the tense of the phrase, “Receive the Holy Spirit in the Greek is Aorist Imperative.  That means a future command.  It wasn’t for that moment, but in the future…and for them it would be the near future.

I often put myself in the place of the characters that I’m reading about so I can try to “experience” the thoughts and emotions they may have been having at the time. Could they have been wondering, “Why in the world is Yeshua blowing on us?”  “What does all of this mean?” When we’re going through our journeys in life, the circumstances surrounding it may truly baffle us, cause us to question and even upset us. We have the unknowns that we’re definitely uneasy about.  But if we’ll have the faith and confidence that truly “YHVH causes all things to work together for good to those who love Elohim [who are loyal to the covenant], to those who are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28) then we can have shalom through the unknowns.

It wouldn’t be too many more days, on the day of Shavuot/Feast of Pentecost, in Acts 2:1-4 that this would happen. “1. When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2. And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. 4. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.”

As the violent rushing wind is filling the whole house, their minds race back to the words and actions of Yeshua when He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit!” “Oh…THIS is that which He was talking about!!!!” Blowing breath was the prophetic portent and sign of the rushing wind that would accompany the giving of the Holy Spirit.  As a result of connecting their prior experience to what is currently happening they yield and receive by faith that which they had been commanded to receive just days before. Now things begin to make sense why Yeshua did and said those things.

It’s the same for us, in the beginning of a journey we don’t usually have the knowledge of the outcome; but if we can believe the patterns in Scripture that are given to us so that we have the faith and hope we need, we can walk in confidence and peace that one day, by the Holy Spirit, we will understand and it will make sense. It is for our good and His glory!!

May the Spirit of YHVH cause us to see the connections of events in our lives so that we don’t miss what He is doing!!

Have a blessed and shalom filled Last Day of Unleavened Bread!!
